From the biggest cities to the most remote areas, from the hottest places on Earth to the frozen polar regions, Ambri will store the energy gathered from wind and solar efficiently, inexpensively and reliably.
Our technology will fundamentally change the way power grids operate, increasing the contribution from renewable resources and reducing the need to build traditional power plants. Customers will see lower electricity bills and more reliable service.
Energy Vault LLC
Lugano, Switzerland-based Energy Vault LLC will offer a modular, gravity-operated system capable of delivering 10 to 38 MWh of energy storage per module. The ability to add modules removes the limits on storage capacity.
The Energy Vault’s lattice-steel towers, 90 to 140 meters tall, are topped by two to six crane arms and surrounded by stacks of concrete weights called bricks. The cranes charge the system with potential energy by lifting the bricks into stacks, then discharge the energy by lowering them, driving a generator. It operates on the same principle as a pumped hydroelectric storage system, in which water is pumped uphill to a high reservoir when generation exceeds demand, then is discharged to the low reservoir through a hydro turbine when demand is higher.
The weights are shaped like big masonry bricks, 4 m high, 2.2 m wide and weighing 35 tonnes each. They are fabricated on site from a mixture of materials that may include debris concrete, cement or soil-composite material.
Form Energy
Form Energy is developing a brand new class of ultra-low cost, long duration energy storage systems. With these new systems, renewables can be made fully firm and dispatchable year-round, and transmission capacity can be expanded without the need for new wires. If we are successful, the global electric system will be entirely reshaped, and given new form.
Aquion Energy
Aquion Energy, maker of energy storage batteries and whole systems based on a novel electrolyte with a chemical composition similar to saltwater, is back in business. The American company, which began production in 2014, went bust in March, offloading 80% of its workforce and sending its website offline. One British company, Solar PV Partners, which was selling Aquion Aqueous Hybrid Ion (AHI) batteries said Aquion had developed a “sustainable, clean and non-hazardous product”, also describing it as “cost-effective” and “scalable” compared to alternative storage technologies.
Antora Energy
Antora Energy is building a low-cost thermal battery for grid-scale energy storage. By combining inexpensive thermal storage media at high temperatures with high-efficiency thermophotovoltaic energy conversion, we will support the widespread integration of renewable resources on the electricity grid.David Bierman, Justin Briggs, and Andrew Ponec founded Antora Energy to build inexpensive grid-scale energy storage by combining their experience in cleantech research, development, and commercialization. They are motivated by their shared passion for energy and climate to commercialize this key missing piece in the clean electricity puzzle.
Urban Electric Power
How it WorksUnder normal conditions, power from the grid passes through the inverter, charging the batteries and powering your household loads. When grid power is lost, power from the batteries is used to keep your home running.
Urban Electric Power (UEP) is a New York based company manufacturing and deploying high-capacity, rechargeable, and inexpensive batteries. Made from earth-abundant and safe materials, zinc and manganese dioxide, these batteries can be stacked to power homes and businesses for several days during power outages and recharged hundreds of times.
These batteries can be recharged from a variety of sources, including solar panels and wind turbines, and can be easily incorporated in micro-grids powered by renewable resources.
UEP’s vision is to provide affordable power to everyone, enabling a future where fuel is replenished on a human timescale.
Eos Aurora
GRID-SCALE ENERGY STORAGEA decade in the making, the Eos Aurora® uses proven chemistry with accessible non-rare earth components in a durable system design that’s been tested in real world deployments. It delivers results in even the most extreme temperatures and conditions and is safe, long lasting and 100% recyclable. Most importantly, it is ready to scale.
With 3-10 hours of discharge capability, immediate response time, and modular construction, the Eos Aurora DC battery system can be scaled and configured to reduce cost and maximize profitability in utility, commercial and industrial, and military market segments. The Eos solution offers many competitive advantages including a 100% depth of discharge and a wide operating temperature range to enable deployment without the use of dedicated heating or cooling.
Breakthrough Energy’s mission is to lead the world to net-zero by supporting cutting-edge research and development; investing in companies that turn game-changing technologies into scalable and transformative solutions; and advocating for policies that speed innovation from lab to market.
Getting to net-zero will be an enormous challenge. It means transforming virtually every activity in modern life and every sector of the economy: electricity, agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and buildings. Yet we’re optimistic that the world can rise to that challenge. By deploying the tools we already have and developing and scaling the ones we don’t, we can avoid a climate catastrophe—and create a world in which everyone everywhere has access to the reliable, affordable, and clean energy they need to thrive.
General Fusion
General Fusion is transforming how the world is energized by developing the first commercially-viable fusion power plant. Fusion will deliver clean, safe and on-demand power at industrial scale, providing a powerful complement to renewables and a pathway to a zero-emission grid.
